Exercise 3 - Writing topic sentences

Instructions: Read the following paragraph and type an appropriate topic sentence in the box.

___________________________________________________________. For a variety of reasons, such as false witnesses, false identification of suspects, forced confessions and hidden evidence, hundreds of innocent individuals have mistakenly been put to death. Since DNA evidence began to be used, hundreds of death-row inmates have been exonerated. Without DNA findings to clearly identify whether a suspect is the real criminal or not, many innocent individuals would have been killed. It is too late to correct those mistakes now, but at least, it is time to acknowledge the fact that it is unjust to impose a sentence that cannot be reversed when mistakes are discovered. The only way to avoid taking innocent lives is to abolish the death penalty.
