Exercise 3 - Writing topic sentences

Instructions: Read the following paragraph and type an appropriate topic sentence in the box.

___________________________________________________________. The responsibility for protecting and rehabilitating juveniles lies within this system's jurisdiction. To this end, the juvenile justice system offers safe and appropriate alternatives to adult prisons. These alternatives may include: suspended judgments, probation, placement in community treatment programs, or commitment to a state agency responsible for juvenile institutional care. In addition, courts have ruled that, unlike adults, juveniles who are committed to institutions have a right to treatment such as therapy and educational or vocational programs. Since these treatment plans give juveniles a chance for emotional growth, education, and eventual rehabilitation, the juvenile justice system is the appropriate place to handle teenage offenders.
