Laws that require safe storage of weapons,
also known as gun-access prevention laws, provide a legal and practical
method of gun control. One of the strongest arguments against gun-control
laws comes from supporters of the Second Amendment of the Bill of
Rights, which states that people have the right to keep and bear arms.
Because access prevention laws do not take away this right, they are
constitutional. These laws support a person's right to bear arms but
state that with this right comes the responsibility of storing these
weapons safely. Also, these laws can be easily implemented. First,
the cost of safely storing a gun or guns is minimal and runs from
just a few dollars for trigger locks to several hundred dollars for
a large-capacity, drill-proof gun safe. In addition, locking and unlocking
a firearm involves little physical and mental effort. Lastly, the
amount of time required to lock and unlock a firearm is minimal, and
does not affect its usability for self-defense. ___________________________________________.
